3 Popular Toy Trends to Look Forward to in 2017
Who doesn’t have fond memories playing when they were young? What toy was popular in your childhood? Regardless of what doll, board game or action figure captured your imagination as a child, we can agree that playing is a lot of fun and it has a lot of benefits.
When children play, they are more than just enjoying themselves. They are developing important life skills and social roles that will prove useful as they grow up.
Many studies support the importance of playtime. Here are some of the things that happen when you encourage children to play:
They behave better
Playing lets children unwind and de-stress which in turn improves their behavior. A 2009 study published in the Pediatrics journal reveals that children display better behavior in the classroom when they are allowed to blow off steam in the playground. Researchers of the paper compared the behavior of 8 and 9-year-old kids in school with and without recess period. The children who had more than 15 minutes of breaks per day behaved better when it was time to go back in class.
They learn teamwork
Playing develops a child’s sense of teamwork especially when it involves big groups or interaction with other children. It helps kids become more mindful of their effect on other people and regulate their own emotions. A 2007 study in the Early Childhood Education Journal revealed that children who experience either free play or supervised play learn to be more aware of other people’s feelings.
They get physical activity
Physical games are a great way for children to get fit and healthy. The American Heart Association recommends children aged 2 and up get at least an hour a day of moderate physical activity. Children who enjoy active lifestyles at an early age are more likely remain highly active later in their life according to a study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.
They exercise their creativity
Muscles aren’t the only things getting exercise when kids play. Children use their creativity during imaginative activities like pretend and dress-up. Encourage children to use their imagination to create unique stories, dialogs and situations.

Toys Evoking 90s Nostalgia
We’ve seen a lot of throwbacks to 90s era pop culture in the last couple of years. Movies from the 1990s are getting remade or rebooted like Independence Day and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There is also a stronger demand for 90s era toys as seen in popular sales of Troll dolls and Nerf guns this year. Expect this trend to continue as more millennials become parents and wish to reenact their magical 90s childhood with their own kids.
Today’s children are growing up to be one tech savvy bunch and toy makers are noticing. Expect more robot toys to enter the market in 2017. Robot toys are unique for being more interactive and “smarter” than normal toys.
Open ended play toys have always been preferred by parent who want to nurture their kids’ imagination. Robot toys take open ended fun to another level by “interacting” with children and encouraging them to customize their playing experience.
